Binduli North mine, operated by Norton Gold Fields, is situated in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Due to the ore processing on site, the mine required a reliable, consistent and cost-effective energy solution. CrossBoundary Energy was engaged to provide a low-impact, high delivery solar PV system for the mine.

Binduli North mine consists of four open pits. Ore is extracted, crushed, processed, and then smelted in an on-site gold room, a process that can extract gold from low-grade ore. The mining site was opened in 2022 and has had a significant economic impact on the region, including creating 200 permanent jobs and delivering millions in royalties to Western Australia.

The initial hybrid power solution developed and owned by CrossBoundary Energy consists of a 2.4 MWp ground-mounted tracking solar system, with the potential of expanding the solar PV solution and including a battery energy storage component.

Commissioned in 2023, the solar PV array uses Cambridge Energy’s pre-fabricated tracker system which comes fully assembled from the factory and folds open on site for quick deployment. The tracker system also uses platypus anchoring, which is much easier to drive into the ground than a conventional pile, creating further construction efficiency. Due to the modular nature of the system, it is also flexible and can be relocated if necessary.

Norton Gold Fields is committed to environmental stewardship and sustainable mining practices. They strive to minimize their environmental impact by implementing measures to reduce water usage, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. The company also focuses on progressive rehabilitation of mining areas to restore the land and biodiversity.
